When I think about Zanzibar I think about spices. About streets lined with men selling fruit, a maze of stone alleyways and kids running through intricately carved wooden doors. Young men diving off of piers at sunset. Walking through the reef at low tide watching women wearing pots on their heads hunt for octopus with long sticks. Dark, skinny, boys running through the water, silhouetted against their crystal clear backdrop. Children commuting to school on bikes driven by fathers wearing skull caps. Mothers lined up at the free medical clinic with their babies in tow, tiny eyes lined with charcoal to ward off evil spirits. Fresh fish markets, dhow boats floating by, getting my PADI scuba certification and a nasty bout of malaria. Breathtaking sunsets daily… The small African island located off the coast of Tanzania lived up to every fairytale and exotic notion I had ever imagined. Zanzibar was the most beautiful place in Africa I had the privilege of visiting. I’m so thankful for these photos, colorful reminders, of one of the top 10 places I have ever traveled to.
Love this story Kira and the pictures confirm why it is among the 10 most beautiful places you have ever traveled to!
