Belize Revisited

Last month, I spoiled myself for my birthday and flew back to Mexico choosing to celebrate on the beach rather than in the snow. Since I was only a 5 hour bus ride and an hour boat ride from Belize I decided to head back and give the beautiful country another try.

When I visited Belize back in the fall it rained non-stop for the three days I was out on the tiny island of Caye Caulker. I had come to Belize with the intentions of diving on its famous reef but the conditions were far from ideal and I didn’t get to go. Despite meeting a bunch of fun travelers, Belize was kind of a bust.

My experience this time was the complete opposite. Blue skies, clear water, perfection. I opted to stay on the more developed island of San Pedro this time and am happy I did. It felt more Belizean to me, more authentic with its bright colors, children in uniform racing around the school, people riding bikes with kids on the handlebars and playing baseball on an old dirt field surrounded by barbed wire.

The diving here was also absolutely amazing. Thirty dolphins, an old sea turtle, graceful eagle rays, a long green moray eel and stunning coral.  One of the best days of my life.

Photo of me and one of the school kids I befriended taken by a 10-year-old Belizean boy who liked my camera so much he said he wants to be a photographer now! 🙂
