SUMATERA, Indonesia April 7- The indigenous people of the Mentawai Islands continue to live deep in the jungle and have retained many of their ancient traditions including extensively tattooing their bodies. The tattoos hold deep cultural significance and symbolize their land of origin and social status. The Mentawai tattoo is believed to be the oldest tattoo in the world dating back to 1500 BC.
KANJIZA, Serbia Sept. 10- Refugees arrive by double-decker bus in to the Serbian boarder town of Kanjiza where they will wait at the Vasariste refugee aid point before continuing on to Hungary. Doctors and translators working with CRS/Caritas are helping provide basic medical services and information about the boarder crossing at the aid station. Over 4,000 refugees pass through Vasariste daily on their way to other European countries, primarily Germany.

KEDISAN, Bali July 21- At her daughter’s funeral, the mother of a nine-year-old girl who drowned is consoled by family members. In Bali, the deceased are buried with offerings to the gods and cherished gifts from their family. This young girl was laid to rest with a worn teddy bear, a box of crayons, and a new pink T-shirt.
ZANZIBAR, Tanzania Mar. 28- A baby hangs off the legs of her mother as she waits to be seen at the Nungwi clinic. It is a tradition to line a baby’s eyes with kohl to ward off people’s evil intentions and protect them from illness.
PLAYA DE AYANGUE, Ecuador Dec. 17- Ecuador’s fishing industry is a major economic pillar, known for its large tuna fleet and significant shrimp production. The country boasts one of the richest fishing grounds in the world due to its location near the Humboldt Current, but it also faces challenges in managing sustainable practices and combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.

NAIROBI, Kenya Jan. 16- Two men from the Akamba tribe stack hundreds of Mikalya sandals, a shoe made of parts from old tires, together at the Kariokor Market. These durable sandals originated in the Akamba tribe and they can make around 100 pairs per day.
